DON’T HAVE A CURRENT RESUMÉ?

There are several reasons why working professionals do not have a resumé that is current, and several more as to why they do not have a resumé at all.

Resumés are a daunting task. They take time, energy, and the ability to be objective and honest when compiling work history, skills, and personal attributes.

To start, you must construct a comprehensive overview of the positions you have held, including all relative dates, education and training, any promotions or awards, and most importantly, a solid compilation of achievements and successes.

Fundamental to developing a good resumé is the ability to highlight and celebrate your achievements within each position or role you have held throughout your career. Every occupation carries its own standards and indicators of success. These must be captured and articulated in a meaningful way.

If you are applying for a position in marketing, the Marketing Manager knows the job and the skills required. Do not state the obvious as in this example.

Job Title | Marketing Specialist | XYZ Company

* Was responsible for developing advertising campaigns.

Instead, describe and celebrate your unique accomplishments.

Job Title | Marketing Specialist | XYZ Company

* Was responsible for development and execution of a major two-month advertising campaign, including radio, television, and social media marketing for Fancy Makeup & Perfumes. Sales increased 30% year-over-year during this time.

The value of having a current and updated resumé can not be understated. While its primary function is facilitating a job search, an active resumé is useful should one be applying to be board member, or requires a biography for a company website or guest speaking engagements. Additionally, it can form the basis of your Linked In profile. While each of these scenarios  requires wordsmithing, having a current resumé as the starting point makes the writing that much easier.

Although you may not have any plans to leave your current employer, an up-to-date resumé allows for a speedy response should an opportunity for advancement be presented to you.

If you were to conduct an online search of “how to write a resumé,” literally hundreds and hundreds of sites would appear. How does one wade through that jungle? How do you know which approach is the best? What are the latest style and content requirements?

Next, search “how much does it cost for a resumé?” Again, you will find prices ranging from $100 to $5000, and everything in between.

Hiring a marketing and writing professional to do the necessary research and fine-tune your resumé presentation does not have to be onerous, or expensive.
